AFRO goes to BRISTOL

Music-wise, UK cities are much more geared towards house, whereas down here we like the tempo a little bit slower. We're more in that 92BPM world nature…. Bristol is also known as a big drum'n'bass city”

Bristol based Kongossa Promotions is the latest name in Afro club nights, set up to create AFRO nights in Bristol, a town which gave birth to some of the most innovative and pioneering music acts of the 90’s, such as Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead, Roni Size and the Full Cycle DJs to name just a few.

Although Bristol is home to a large African population, there were no regular African club events catering for this globally expanding brand of music. Enter KONGOSSA whose aim is to bring modern and edgy African music to the city centre venues with the freshest DJ’s and live acts.

After creative consultation within African communities and cultural experts, it was decided the night will be called KONGOSSA, a pidgin word for “gossip”, as we wanted a memorable and groovy sounding title for western ears that Africans would recognise as their own, KONGOSSA has a recognisable ring too that non-pidgin speakers would remember and enjoy repeating.

For our first event, we brought a DJ roster which will introduce you to an infectious fusion of syncopated, intricate and contagious rhythms patterns spanning the whole of Africa, thumbing vintage horns, harmonized tribal chants, multi-lingual rapping and the grooviest traditional folklore to rock a modern dance-floor ever.

There ain’t a beat like an African beat and Kongossa intend to show this to the population of Bristol. Mainly we just wanted to merge the cream of western dance music with Afro club land and black music in our town. Bristol!
