AFROGROOV presents #componentsRW with support from British Council

Earlier this year, the British Council launched a new grant scheme, new Art new Audiences, with an open call to artists, musicians, film makers and cultural institutions across Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and the UK to create new art to showcase to audiences in the UK and East Africa. The open call aims to provide a platform for the diversity of ideas and creative expression of East Africa’s vibrant arts scene.

The grant requires creatives to work in partnerships that include at least one UK partner and two East African partners (from two different countries). Between three and five projects shall be selected in 2016–17.
We are happy to announce that our project COMPONENTS was awarded the New Art New Audiences grant from the British Council.
COMPONENTS (by afrogroov) is a collaborative project initiated by Rwandese DJ & Music curator Kirenga Karengera also known as DJ ERIC SOUL, it brings together British Producer Yemisi Mokuolu and a network of creative power-houses from Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and the UK. This project will explore and translate multi´disciplinary traditional African art forms in innovative ways, with a focus on the unique rhythm signatures and story-telling style of the region.
Rwandese sounds, culture and artistry is barely known outside the country borders, it is yet to be unearthed, discovered and shared with the outside world. This project aims to explore, experiment, educate and inspire. Rooted in both the UK club culture and Rwandan performing style, the presentation of the new work is a DJ-led multi media and multi disciplinary collaborative piece between Rwanda DJ/Music curator Eric Soul, British Producer Yemisi Mokuolu, Rwandans poet Eric One Key, singer mc Angel Mutoni, traditional instrumentalist Deo Munyakazi, singer songwriter Mike Kayihura and various performing artists and promoters, festivals and venues in East Africa and the UK.

This project will bring DJ's, MC's, instrumentalists, vocalists and digital artists to fuse deeply rooted traditional East African art forms and re-imagining it for the 21st digital century. Presented under the format of a Live DJ VJ Mixtape, live mc's, singers, live performers, instrumentalists and visuals will interact inter-weaves to the seamless grooves of the DJ and immerse the audience into a unique collective experience of story-telling and discovery of East African culture.
